Definition

Aperture area is the transparent opening of a solar collector through which sunlight enters, as distinct from gross area (the outer dimensions) and absorber area (the plate itself). Efficiency coefficients and outputs must always state which reference area they use; Solar Keymark datasheets based on ISO 9806 now use gross area. Storage sizing rules such as 50–70 L per m² normally refer to aperture area.
