Hydraulic separation is the decoupling of a heat generator's circuit from the distribution circuits so that each pump sees only its own resistance and flow rates can differ. It is achieved with a buffer tank or a low-loss header and is important for heat pumps, which need a guaranteed minimum flow and volume even when thermostatic valves or zone controls close off parts of the system.
