A magnesium anode is a sacrificial rod fitted inside an enamel-lined hot water tank that corrodes in place of the steel at any pores or welds in the enamel, extending the tank's life. It should be inspected every one to two years and replaced when it is largely consumed. Impressed-current (titanium) anodes are a maintenance-free alternative powered by a small electronic unit.
