Definition

Solar fraction is the share of a building's hot water or heating demand that is covered by solar energy over a year, expressed as a percentage. Well-sized solar water heaters reach 50–70 % in Central Europe and 70–90 % in Southern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Higher fractions require more collector area and storage, so systems are usually optimised for cost per kWh rather than the maximum fraction.
