Definition
A heat exchanger coil is a spiral of smooth or corrugated tube inside a storage tank through which one fluid flows to transfer heat to the water surrounding it, keeping the two circuits separate. Solar tanks use a low coil for the collector loop, and heat pump cylinders need a large coil — around 0.25–0.3 m² per kW — because their low flow temperature reduces the temperature difference available for heat transfer.
